Iyengar Yoga guides students through progressive stages:
Mobility, Stability, Meditation in Action
Each level builds on the previous one, supporting strength, clarity, and awareness. Classes follow rotating themes—standing poses, forward bends, twists, backbends, inversions, and pranayama—so students can explore poses deeply, develop balanced strength and flexibility, and experience their therapeutic and meditative benefits.

Beginner:
Mobility & Fundamentals
For new students or anyone looking to build a solid foundation. Students explore all āsana, with a focus on standing poses, which form the backbone for all other categories. Classes develop basic postures, joint mobility, strength, and body awareness. Sirsasana (headstand) and Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) are introduced, with adaptations for any limitations.

Beginner/Intermediate:
Mobility and Stability
For students comfortable with foundational poses and ready to refine alignment. Bridges beginner and intermediate levels, offering a smooth transition toward fully intermediate practice.
Intermediate:
Stability / Refinement
For students who are well established in foundational poses and introductory inversions. The focus is on refining alignment, building stamina, and developing concentration through longer stays in the postures. A regular home practice is encouraged to deepen both physical and mental awareness.

Intermediate/Advanced:
Stability / Meditation in Action
For students with a solid intermediate foundation and a regular home practice. The focus is on refining technique while cultivating sustained attention, subtlety, and a meditative quality of self-observation.

Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga:
At Iyengar Yoga Circle, pregnant students of all levels are welcome to join group classes. Each trimester has its own specific focus to support both physical and mental well-being throughout pregnancy. For those needing extra care or flexible scheduling, one-on-one private sessions are also available. The practice naturally continues into the postnatal period, with adapted variations and thoughtful sequencing to support a smooth recovery.

Therapeutic Classes: Group & Private
Therapeutic practice is offered in both small-group classes and one-on-one private sessions, depending on the student’s needs.
Currently, Nasim offers private 1:1 sessions, providing individualized assessment, customized sequencing, and tailored prop setups. For students with milder concerns, participation in a regular group class is appropriate, with postures adapted to support individual needs while maintaining the class sequence.
This flexible approach ensures that every student receives safe, effective, and personalized guidance.
Mentorship Program
A practitioner wishing to become a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and join the Mentorship Program should have completed minimum three consecutive years of consistent Iyengar Yoga practice. The program follows the traditional Iyengar apprenticeship model, in which each apprentice works closely with their mentor who provides guidance, feedback, and support throughout the learning journey.
The training unfolds over a minimum three-year period and includes:
-
Observation of classes and teaching methods
-
Dedicated self-practice
-
Assisting in classes
-
Supervised teaching practice
-
Ongoing class participation
Studies in anatomy and selected readings in Yoga philosophy complement the practical training, supporting both technical skill and a deeper understanding of yoga.
Upon completion, students undertake a final assessment reviewed and validated by senior teachers and assessors of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada (IYAC).
FAQ
Is Iyengar Yoga only for people who are already flexible or fit?
Not at all. Iyengar Yoga is accessible to people of all abilities, regardless of flexibility, strength, age, or fitness level. The method uses clear instructions, props, and progressive learning to help each student work safely and effectively from where they are. Flexibility and strength are outcomes of practice—not requirements to begin.
Is Iyengar Yoga suitable for older adults?
Yes. The method is highly adaptable and supports students of all ages. Modifications and props allow safe and effective practice.
What should I wear to class?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows full movement. Shorts, leggings, or yoga pants with a T-shirt or tank top work well. Cotton yoga shorts and T-shirts are preferred as they are allowing the skin to breathe, while still letting both you and your teacher see the alignment of your arms, legs, and especially your knees. Avoid overly loose or bulky garments that may restrict movement or obscure posture lines.
Which class level should I start with?
If you are new to Iyengar Yoga—or yoga in general—start with the Beginner class. No experience is needed, and you’ll be guided step by step in a supportive environment.
Can I join even if I am menstruating, have injuries, or health concerns?
Yes. Iyengar Yoga is adaptive and can be safely practiced during menstruation or when working with injuries and health conditions. Please inform your teacher beforehand so appropriate modifications can be offered. If you have specific medical concerns, consult your healthcare provider and share any recommendations with your teacher.
How do I know when I’m ready to move to the next level?
Progress is not based on flexibility or strength alone. Your teacher will help guide you based on:
-
Your understanding of basic poses and key actions
-
Your ability to stay steady and attentive in practice
-
Your readiness for increased complexity and longer stays in the poses
Students may repeat any level as long as needed.
Do I need to practice inversions to attend Intermediate classes?
No. Students who cannot practice inversions due to health or safety reasons are taught appropriate alternatives that provide similar therapeutic benefits.
Is a home practice required?
A home practice is encouraged at all levels and becomes especially important in Intermediate and Advanced classes. The Advanced level expects that students already maintain a regular self-practice.
Can I move down a level if I need to?
Absolutely. Levels are flexible. Many students attend a mix of levels depending on their needs and schedules. Returning to an earlier level is always welcome and beneficial.
